Definition: Digital collectibles are digital assets with relationship with the underlying material reality.

Description

These assets could be used to build game-worlds with scarce economic mechanics that improve the underlying material reality, a.k.a. "impact-to-earn" or "play-to-conserve" mechanics. Certain protocols permit digital collectibles to function as wallets themselves, which can in turn accumulate, utilize, or spend crypto-assets.

Example

Sovereign Nature Initiative (SNI) is a non-profit organization aiming to "transform eco-data into biodiversity funding / unique gaming content".

SNI created the Decentralized Ecological Economics Protocol (DEEP), enabling eco-data, generated from various conservation activities, to be integrated it into digital assets. They notably worked with WalletConnect to create the Soundwaves NFT Collection: 100K+ celebratory NFTs tied to whale bioacoustics that support Aquasearch, a marine wildlife conservation organisation.
